Why Positive Reinforcement Matters for Your Dog’s Well-Being

Training is more than teaching “sit,” “stay,” or “come.” The way we train our dogs can affect how they feel, how they learn, and even the relationship they build with us.

Research comparing reward-based training with aversive methods has found that training style can influence dog welfare, stress, learning, and the dog-owner bond. One study found that dogs trained with aversive methods showed more stress-related behaviors and had higher cortisol levels after training than dogs trained with reward-based methods.

Another study looked specifically at the relationship between dogs and their owners. It found that dogs trained with reward-based methods showed more signs of a secure attachment, while aversive-based training was associated with weaker secure-base behaviors.

This matters because training should not just stop unwanted behavior. Good training should help dogs feel safe, understand what we want, and enjoy working with their people. Reward-based training uses things dogs value, such as treats, praise, toys, play, and real-life rewards, to teach the behaviors we want to see more often.

A review of multiple studies concluded that aversive training methods (like shock, prong, or choke collars) can risk dogs’ physical and emotional welfare, and that there is no evidence that punishment-based methods are more effective than positive reinforcement.

The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior also recommends reward-based training, stating that evidence supports reward-based methods for all canine training and that there is no evidence aversive training is necessary for dog training or behavior modification.

At Awesome Dog Academy, we believe training should build confidence, trust, and communication. Dogs learn best when they feel safe enough to try, make mistakes, and succeed. Positive reinforcement helps families teach real-life manners while protecting the relationship they have with their dog.

When training is kind, clear, and consistent, dogs are not just better behaved — they are happier, more confident companions.
